Case of COVID-19 identified in Lismore area, school in Goonellabah closed

A case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in the Lismore area this afternoon by local health authorities.

There has been no announcement yet about whether this will mean a lockdown for any parts of the region.

The COVID-positive person is a resident of northern New South Wales and attended Goonellabah Public School on Monday.

In an update on the school's website, the school said it would be "non-operational effective immediately" so cleaning and contact tracing could take place.

The out-of-school-hours service has also been closed.

In a statement, the Northern NSW Health District said it was working with the Department of Education to advise parents and pupils of the school.

All staff and students have been asked to self-isolate until they receive further advice.

The case comes less than a week after the Northern Rivers was released from lockdown, after first being subject to stay-at-home orders on August 9.

Lismore MP Janelle Saffin said the news was a blow to the community.

"On the weekend there was a lightness in the community that we haven't had for some time, it was palpable," she said.

"[After this news] it was a feeling of concern all round."

The source of the person's infection is still under investigation, and a spokesperson for the health district said health authorities were still establishing whether the person had been infectious elsewhere in the community.

Known contacts are being contacted and advised to get tested immediately and self-isolate.

The health district has urged all residents with even the mildest of symptoms to come forward for testing.
