Case Keenum is looking forward to a QB competition with Dwayne Haskins

Over the past handful of months, Case Keenum’s name has been mentioned in the same sentence as former Baltimore Ravens’ QB Joe Flacco a lot.

It’s not just that the two veteran signal-callers have experienced similar career paths, complete with a number of mediocre seasons buoyed by singular standout years that keep them on a 53-man roster. They also have been eerily close to each other in the NFL’s ever-moving QB Carousel — Keenum was playing for the Denver Broncos in 2018, where Flacco is now set to take his place.

Most recently, however, Keenum is being compared to the former Superbowl winner as more of a warning of what might come, and he’s ready to embrace the challenge.

The Washington Redskins just drafted Dwayne Haskins, a hot-shot young QB set to take over the franchise in the years to come. As the current starter for the team, Keenum finds himself in a situation that Flacco experienced just a year ago when the Ravens drafted Lamar Jackson in the first round.

“This is no new game to me,” Keenum said of the upcoming QB competition, via the Washington Times. “I’ve been in this situation before.”

Many expect — or hope, at least — that the Redskins will choose to let Keenum man the ship for the first handful of games, if not the whole season, while Haskins transitions into the NFL lifestyle. However, the Redskins have said that they’re in a ‘Win-Now’ mindset, and if the rookie gives them a decided advantage over the vet, then the answer is simple.

For Keenum, there’s nothing to do other than go to work every day and prove his worth. If his starting job happens to get usurped, so be it.

He could always call up Flacco to get some tips on what to do on the bench so as not to get bored during games.
