Case filed against news channel head over derogatory remarks

JAIPUR: Members of the Meena community Friday registered an FIR against Sudarshan news head Suresh Chavhanke for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the tribal community.

The FIR was registered at the Transport Nagar police station under Sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC, along with relevant sections SC, ST and IT acts.

The FIR was filed by Giraj Meena, an office-bearer of the Rajasthan Adivasi Meena Seva Sangh, Jaipur unit. The members of the Meena community claimed that after the Amagarh fort incident, Chavhanke has been insulting the community from his channel all the while making incendiary remarks.

“He (Chavhanke) has hurt the sentiments of the tribal community by using insulting slurs. We decided to file a complaint against him at the Transport Nagar police station and requested police to take strict action against him,” Meena said.

Independent MLA from Gangapur city, Ramkesh Meena had also castigated Chavhanke and the news channel for the latter’s controversial remarks. Chavhanke had also reportedly vowed to come to Jaipur and visit the Amargarh fort on August 1, following which the Meena community reacted strongly to what they called a ‘provocative’ statement. Police, meanwhile, have cordoned off the entire area leading to the hill fort and warned anyone exhorting people to assemble at the place which has become a flashpoint between Meena and Hindu outfits.

So far, three separate FIRs have been registered at the Transport Nagar police station related to the Amagarh row. Sources in Jaipur police claimed that investigation into all three cases is underway.
