Cary-Grove righty Quinn Priester goes to Pirates in first round of MLB Draft

Cary-Grove right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester was selected 18th overall by the Pirates in the MLB Draft on Monday.

Priester, a 6-foot-3 senior, posted a 1.11 ERA and struck out 127 in 88.1 innings during his high school career. Dozens of major-league scouts attend his starts this season, when he regularly threw 95 mph. His curveball is considered one of the best in the 2019 high school class.

The Trojans lost to Hampshire in the sectional finals last week, so Priester’s high school career is over.

Priester has committed to Texas Christian to play baseball. He’s also a star in football, starting at wide receiver and defensive back. Cary-Grove won the Class 6A state title this season.
