Police are investigating whether two car fires in suburban Melbourne are linked to a suspected gangland-linked shooting after the same home was targeted twice in a matter of days.

Officers were called to a car fire in the driveway of a home on Major Road at Fawkner in Melbourne's north about 3.20am on Thursday.

A number of people ran out of a waiting getaway car and poured accelerant onto the driveway before setting the parked blue Toyota Camry alight, police said.

They found a white Toyota Camry torched at the intersection of William Street and Lowson Street, about three minutes' drive away, a short time later.

Both vehicles were severely damaged but nobody was injured in the fires.

Victoria Police armed crime squad detectives were on Thursday investigating whether the suspicious blazes were linked, and whether the fires were also connected to a shooting at the same Major Road property on Saturday.

In that incident, two men allegedly arrived at the home in a stolen white Suzuki Swift about 11pm before one of the men fired shots at the front door.

The other man, also armed with a gun, unsuccessfully tried to force his way into the Major Road home, police said.

The duo then fled the house in the Suzuki.

The three people inside the property were uninjured.

Police later found the Suzuki torched with a gun inside on Fashion Parade at Broadmeadows in Melbourne's north, officers said.

Investigators believed the car fires and the shooting were targeted incidents.

The home in the Fawkner shooting was connected to an alleged gangland figure, Nine reported.

Police urged anyone with information about the incidents to come forward.
