Cars torched at Scots prison as terrifying arson attack sparks major cop probe

Cops are hunting a dark coloured vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene at a Scots prison last night after numerous cars were deliberately set on fire.

Officers probing the terrifying attack say at least six cars were targeted by arsonists in the staff carpark and have been extensively damaged.

Emergency services raced to HMP Kilmarnock just after 7pm as fire crews battled the inferno for two hours.

The cars are thought to belong to warders and staff working within the prison.

Police have launched an urgent investigation into the attack and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Enquiries into the car fires are currently ongoing (Handout)

Officers are currently scouring CCTV footage for further information on the car and its occupants.

Detective Inspector Ewan Bell said: “I’m sure someone will have seen or noticed this dark coloured car as it sped off from the prison car park.

" All of the cars involved have been extensively damaged and I am appealing to people who were in the area around the time of the incident to contact us.

"Also, I would appeal to any motorists to check their dash cam footage as it may have captured an image which could assist us in our enquiries.”

Five cars were targeted (Handout)

Additional officers will be patrolling the area to provide reassurance to the local community and anyone with concerns can approach and speak to the officers.

Anyone with information is being urged to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 3428 of 23 April.

Crimestoppers can alternatively be contacted on 0800 555 111.
