Multiple cars have been swept out to sea along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road as flash flooding and rain continue to wreak havoc on the southern state.
An emergency warning has been issued for Victoria’s Wye River, Kennett River, Cumberland River, Lorne and surrounding areas, with the State Emergency Service (SES) urging residents to take shelter from flood water.
Per the Sydney Morning Herald, about 6500 homes within the region do not have power.
In videos shared on social media, multiple cars can be seen being swept out to sea alongside the Wye River and the Cumberland River on Great Ocean Road.
Tents, caravans and other camping equipment have also been swept out to sea, 9News reports.
In footage shared with the SMH, parts of the Wye River Big4 holiday park were overrun with rapid floodwaters, with cars being taken out to the ocean.
“Suddenly, the water was just coming up,” Rebecca Scott, a Melbourne woman who claimed to be camping at the park, told the publication.
“You know that feeling, that moment in time when you’re like, ‘this is a flood’. This is dangerous waters.”
According to 9News, it’s unknown if the flooded vehicles are all empty.
Alongside the cars and camping gear being swept out to sea, the SES have also confirmed homes and buildings have been affected by the flooding.
Ahead of the emergency warning, ABC News reported that the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) recorded that the Mt Cowley, near Lorne, was lashed with more than 170mm of rain on Thursday morning from 9am.
The public has been urged to avoid these, with 9News reporting that four police helicopters have been deployed to help with evacuations and rescues.
Speaking to ABC Radio Melbourne, Erin Mason from the SES warned, “Rain is going to continue in the area, so people should still just remain vigilant. But for now, those storms seem to have eased.”
However, a severe thunderstorm warning is forecast for Central, West and South Gippsland districts later this evening with fires continuing in the Otways.
