Cars stuck in flood water and roads closed as Storm Christoph causes more chaos

Four cars were left stuck in three feet of flood water as Storm Christoph continued to cause travel chaos across the region.

Gorsey Lane in St Helens, was closed this morning after heavy rain caused widespread flooding in areas overnight.

St Helens Council are urging people not to drive through floodwater and to take note of road closures before travelling today.

The council tweeted: "There are four cars stuck in 3ft of water on Gorsey Lane, Bold. Don't be like them.

"Driving through floodwater is dangerous: It's the number one cause of death during flooding, 30cm of flowing water can move a car and one egg-cupful of water will wreck your engine."

Road closures in St Helens include Gorsey Lane, Peasley Cross Lane at the Railway Bridge and Clockface Road near School Lane.

Elsewhere in the region, hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes overnight after the Environment Agency issued four "severe" flood warnings, meaning there is a danger to life.

This includes people living in some areas of Sefton who were told they had to leave their homes as soon as possible for the safety of their families.

This warning comes after the water level in the nearby River Alt reached 2.5m yesterday.

Merseyrail lines are blocked between Hooton and Chester/Ellesmere Port due to flooding, while mainline lines are blocked between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street.
