Parked cars towed in Clifton as 'essential works' carried out

Part of Queen’s Road and Merchants Road in Clifton has reopened after being shut off today for essential roadworks.

It is the second time Merchants Road has been closed in four days after it was shut on Friday and parked cars were being towed away.

Signs along the road today (Monday, August 24) warned the street would be closed for two days while Eurovia Specialist Treatments carry out work on behalf of Bristol City Council.

The number eight bus service, which usually stops outside the student union building and Victoria Square, was being diverted down Pembroke Road for a period, but is now operating along its usual route.

There are currently no road markings on a stretch of the road along Victoria Square.

The local authority was asked on Friday to confirm how long the works would be going on for and where cars were being taken for storage.

It was also asked if it would be notifying people whose cars have been removed and how much it would cost for people to retrieve their vehicles.

Today, a spokesperson for the council told Bristol Live that residents were informed earlier in the year that work would take place between April and September.

However, Bristol Live spoke to some residents of Merchants Road and they appeared to be unaware the work would be taking place.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Trestle signs were then erected at each end of the site, with dates and a brief description of the work.

"A letter was delivered to all properties which front onto the work, and other properties which are significantly affected by the work. No Parking Cones were placed 24 hours before the work is due to start, as well as Tow Away signage.

“Surface Dressing is a fairly quick job, with up to six sites being surfaced each day. However, it is reliant on dry weather and certain road temperatures, so the programme is often subject to change.

"This work was due to have been completed on Friday, but unfortunately rain prevented that from happening. It will now be completed on Monday, weather permitting.

“If we need to tow vehicles to clear the road, then they are moved to neighbouring streets, which is carried out at the council’s cost.

"Due to programme changes, it is extremely difficult to provide more notice than we do, which is why no charges are applied to the towing of vehicles.”
