Cars piled high with rubbish queue as tips open for the first time in lockdown

Hundreds of people queued in their cars outside recycling centres in Wales today as some opened for the first time since the lockdown.

The three waste tips in Wrexham are the first in North Wales to reopen under a modest relaxing of lockdown rules by the Welsh Government.

Vehicles, many groaning with unwanted items, lined a road in Brymbo ahead of the opening of the facility at 12pm, with a PCSO also at the scene.

One motorist queuing to enter, with its boot left open, had several mattresses stacked on the roof of their car, with a sofa taking up the back seats.

However, the biggest queues were seen at the Bryn Lane site on the Industrial Estate, with more than 100 cars reported to be lining up to dump their waste.

But while many were keen to clear out their clutter, Wrexham Council has warned the facilities are only to be used if it is "essential".

Strict social distancing measures are in place across all three sites in Brymbo, Bryn Lane and Plas Madoc, with the council warning the tips will immediately close down again if the rules are not followed.

Residents must also bring proof they live in the county, otherwise entry will be refused.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, leader of the council, said: "Social distancing is crucial, and we’ll be conducting visits throughout the weekend to ensure the rules are being obeyed.

"If there any problems relating to safety, or we find users are breaking critical social distancing rules, the sites will be closed immediately."

On Monday recycling centres in both England and Northern Ireland will be permitted to open again.

Scotland is to issue an update on whether its recycling centres will be reopened this weekend.
