Cars of 'key workers' have windows smashed in while parked in city centre

Eight cars parked in the city centre were found with their windows smashed in this morning.

Pictures show the cars parked in a row, along Pall Mall, all with their windows smashed.

The cars are likely to have belonged to key workers needing to make journeys into the city centre, with police currently warning against all but essential journeys.

Despite the city being under lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, the cars were targeted during the early hours of Friday morning.

Police were called to the scene at 7.10am on Friday to reports that eight cars had been found with their windows smashed in.

Photos and video taken this afternoon shows multiple cars with the windows smashed in and shattered glass on the road and pavement.

It is not thought that anyone witnessed the incident and police are currently conducting CCTV enquiries.

Community Policing Inspector Charlotte Irlam said: “We’re making enquiries to identify the owners of all these vehicles, and to gather any available dashcam or CCTV footage to find those responsible.

“The stress and inconvenience of having your vehicle damaged is significant at any time, but the last thing anyone needs at the moment is more worry, especially when essential journeys still need to be made.

“Our officers continue to patrol in Liverpool and across the force, and only this week we saw some excellent arrests of suspected burglars in the city centre. I’d encourage anyone living or working in Liverpool to remain vigilant, report any suspicious incidents to us, and we’ll do the rest.

“If you witnessed this incident or have captured any CCTV or dashcam footage, please do get in touch via our social media desk @MerPolCC, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, with reference 102."
