Cars explode into flames as hooded figure lobs object in mystery arson attack

This is the moment a car explodes into flames in a arson attack carried out under cover od darkness.

A 'hooded arsonist' is captured on CCTV hurling an object into an east Birmingham Street.

The figure can seen in footage lighting the fire at the front of a parked vehicle outside Crabtree house in east Birmingham.

He then takes a few steps back towards the side of the car before throwing an item towards the flickering inferno. He then tosses another mystery object onto the fire and the car explodes into flames.

The suspected arsonist makes off from the scene, leaving the passenger side of the car burning in the street.

Fortunately, it is not believed anyone was hurt, according to Birmingham Live.

The incident - which police are treating as an arson attack - took place shortly after midnight, on the morning of Saturday, May 1.

A neighbour, who provided the footage, said there were similar incidents in the area in January.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said they sent one fire crew to deal with the fire, involving the 'passenger compartment' of the vehicle.

"They requested the police because one of the neighbours had CCTV of what happened," she said.

West Midlands Police said officers were speaking to witnesses and would seize the above CCTV to examine.

Anyone who witnessed the attack was urged to come forward.

A statement from the force read: "We were alerted to a car fire just after midnight this morning (1 May) in Giles Close, Birmingham.

"It’s suspected the vehicle was deliberately set alight. We’re speaking to witnesses and will seize CCTV for examination.

"Any witnesses or anyone who saw someone in the area acting suspiciously are urged to message us on Live Chat through the website or call us on 101 quoting log 31 from 1 May."

The force added that it was too early to say whether the incident was being linked to arson attacks in the area during January.
