Cars banned from Glasgow parks following Strathclyde Park mayhem

Cars have been banned from parks in Glasgow following on from the fiasco which saw hundreds of motorists descend on Strathclyde Park at the weekend.

Videos shared on social media showed cars parked bumper to bumper at the park near Motherwell - despite restrictions in place on non-essential travel amid the coronavirus crisis.

And now Glasgow City Council have taken the decision to close parks in the city to unauthorised vehicles with immediate effect.

A statement issued by the Council said: "Due to concerns about members of the public undertaking unnecessary journeys in their vehicles to visit city parks, all parks will now be closed to unauthorised vehicles with immediate effect.

"The government advice is clear that people should stay at home to help restrict the spread of the Covid-19 virus, subject to a limited number of exemptions.

"During the current public health crisis, we urge anyone wishing to undertake daily exercise to do so in their local community and to leave the car at home.

"Please avoid any unnecessary journeys and do not drive to one of our parks as usual car parking facilities will not be available.

"Parks remain open to walkers and cyclists in line with the regulations on social distancing and the restrictions on gathering in groups".
