CARRINGTON'S "much loved" Tippler Footbridge is in line for a makeover, with upgrade work to begin on Wednesday.
The footbridge, built in the 1960s, connects Carrington to the Newcastle Harbour foreshore. The bridge will undergo structural repairs, and the ageing concrete pathway will be replaced. It will also be reinstalled with energy efficient lighting.
Port of Newcastle's executive manager of projects and assets, Glenn Thornton, said Carrington Foreshore would be temporarily inaccessible during the works, which are expected to take about six to seven weeks.
"The footbridge is a much-loved Carrington icon," Mr Thornton said. "After more than 50 years we are conducting the refurbishment to ensure we can offer continued safe access to this community amenity."
