Carrie Underwood's husband and sons forced to hide in safe-room during deadly Tennessee tornadoes

Carrie Underwood has revealed her husband and children were caught up in the devastating tornadoes that ravaged Tennessee on Tuesday morning. 

The singer said her husband, former ice hockey player Mike Fisher, and young sons Isaiah, 5, and Jacob, 13 months, sheltered in a safe-room in their Nashville home. 

In an interview on the Today show, Ms Underwood said:  '[He] said he had to go upstairs at 2am and grab the boys and take them down to [our] safe-room. "I was like, ‘I bet everybody is crying.’ It’s 2 a.m., freaking out, so it was scary.”

Underwood was in New York at the time, promoting her new book. 

So far, 22 people have been confirmed killed, and multiple injuries are reported a with over 150 admitted to hospital as a result of the tornadoes. 

Dramatic drone footage reveals wide areas of devastation with homes destroyed, cars overturned and buildings torn to their foundations. 

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has declared a level three state of emergency for the state.

Governor Bill Lee confirmed that fatalities occurred in Davidson County, which includes Nashville, as well as in Putnam, Benton and Wilson counties. Several people have been reported missing.

Tens of thousands were still without power on Tuesday night around Tennessee’s capital city. Nashville's fire department said it was responding to reports of approximately 40 structure collapses.
