Carrie Fisher birthday: Watch Princess Leia actor hilariously tear into Star Wars director George Lucas

After starring in one of the most pivotal films in cinematic history, it could be easy for an actor to take themselves too seriously – but not Carrie Fisher.

The actor, who would have turned 64 today (21 October), first played Princess Leia in George Lucas' Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).

Over the years, the vibrant Fisher – who passed away aged 60 on 27 December, 2016 – fast became known for her comic timing.

One such instance presented itself at an AFI awards ceremony honouring Lucas in 2005.

“Hi, I'm Mrs Han Solo and I'm an alcoholic,” she announced in a deadpan manner after arriving on the stage.

She then lovingly laid into the director, whom she quipped had “ruined [her] life”.

“Fifty-seven years ago, I did his little Star Wars film – a cult film that then went on to redefine what they laughingly refer to as the face of cinema.”

She continued: “George is a sadist, but like any abused child wearing a metal bikini chained to a giant slug about to die, I keep coming back for more.”

In front of an audience comprised of some of cinema's most recognisable faces, including Steven Spielberg and Warren Beatty, Fisher referenced how the sci-fi franchise made her into a cultural icon.

Carrie Fisher swiftly became known for her comic timing

“You made me into a little doll that my first husband could stick pins into,” she joked, adding: “Among your many possessions, you have owned my likeness all these years so that every time I look in the mirror, I have to send you a cheque for a couple of bucks.”

As the speech concludes, Fisher grows increasingly irate over Lucas’s “genius”, shouting: “I hope I slept with you to get the job, because if not, who the hell was that guy?”

May the force always be with Carrie Fisher.
