Carrie and Boris Johnson, the prime minister, are expecting their second child, it has been announced.

In a post on her Instagram account on Saturday, Mrs Johnson - who married the Conservative Party leader during a “small ceremony” in May - wrote that they are hoping for their “rainbow baby” this Christmas.

The term refers to a baby born after the loss of another child through miscarriage, stillbirth or death during infancy.

Ms Johnson’s caption, accompanied by a picture of a blue pram, continues: “At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves.

“Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well.”

The news follows the birth of the pair’s first child, Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, who was born in April 2020.
