Carrickfergus Castle to come alive for Waking the Dragon free family event

A Co Antrim castle is set to come alive this weekend with an incredible light show entitled Waking the Dragon.

Theatre Group Kaleidoscope have created a thrilling new light show for Carrickfergus Castle which will be unveiled this Saturday 9 November.

The show is based upon “The Legend of Feredore” a new mythology for the castle created by Kaleidoscope director Kerry Rooney.

The legend holds that there was once a mighty dragon entombed deep beneath the walls of the castle’s keep. Once in every ten thousand years the dragon wakes and escapes his prison. Three Knights (inspired by the Knights of Carrickfergus sculpture) stand in perpetual wait, frozen in time, waiting for the hour when the Dragon slips his bonds and they must once more do battle.

The second half of the show draws upon key moments from Carrickfergus’s history, such as the sail past of the Titanic in 1912, to demonstrate the march of time and the advances of humankind over the last 150 years. The show was written by Kerry Rooney and illustrated by Belfast artist Ralph Connolly.

This unique event has been commissioned by Mid and East Antrim Council who hope that the light show will bring thousands of visitors to the town and encourage more people to explore the castle and the local area. The project is supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body - SEUPB.

An artisan market, at Market Place, will run from 12noon until 7pm with activities for children including arts & crafts taking place in The Dobbs Room at Carrickfergus Town Hall from 2pm to 4pm.

The light show will begin at 5.30pm with shows every 30minutes there-after. The event is free to the public and no booking is required.
