Carrick Rangers assistant manager keen to avoid Pep Guardiola comparison

Assistant manager Scott Irvine was keen to avoid any Pep Guardiola comparisons as he hailed the importance of Carrick Rangers' supporters.

The Amber Army were out in force on Saturday to cheer on Stuart King's side to a spirited 1-0 win over Portadown.

Mark Surgenor's penalty sealed Carrick's third win in five Premiership games, a result which sends them fourth in the table.

Manchester City supremo Guardiola became embroiled in a war of words with his club's fanbase this week after urging more of them to attend their game against Southampton.

The comments irritated some fans who feel the manager has questioned their loyalty.

Irvine would love to see as many Carrick fans as possible attend their games this season, and is under no illusions how important their support is in the top flight.

Irvine told the BBC: "It was brilliant to hear the fans today singing 'Amber Army', and it is great to see more fans coming to the ground.

"I am not going to sound like Pep Guardiola here, but we need them. And they make a massive difference to us and what we're about.

"We are trying to get everyone in this together, and they are huge. You saw it last season that without fans it is nothing.

"We are new. We are young. But we are really eager and we will work hard for everything we've got.

"And we have a great squad who are eager to play Premiership football."

Reflecting on Saturday's win, Irvine added: "The win was massive. It was hard-fought.

"We got our goal and then it was a wee bit chaotic at the end. Portadown threw everything they had at us, but the boys were resolute and threw their bodies on the line.

"The togetherness of the group is fantastic, and it is another clean sheet. If we can build on that and get points on the board, then that will be great."
