Carrick Lowland Gathering will have something for everyone this summer

Organisers of the Carrick Lowland Gathering have promised a bumper schedule when this year’s event gets under way.

The popular event, now in its 40th year, takes place at Victory Park, Girvan, on Sunday, June 4 and once again there’s going to be plenty of fun for all the family.

The programme is now out in local shops and will be distributed throughout the south west region.

Chieftain this year is Callum Govus, from the Girvan RNLI.

Speaking in the programme Callum said it is a “great pleasure” to be chosen as the Chieftain of the Carrick Lowland Gathering.

On the day there will be a variety of events to keep everyone entertained.

There’s Highland Dancing, Pipe Band competition, the Crowning of the Civic King and Queen, walking football; juvenile piping competition, heavy weights competition, The 4.5km Saughill race, fun fair and much more.

Other features will include the beer tent, food and drink stalls, craft, charity and trade stalls.

Although there is free entry to the event, all day unlimited wristbands for the funfair will cost £10 and can be purchased in advance from the Paper Shop and the Sweetie Shop.

And inflatable (one ride) vouchers cost £3 on the day.

The Gathering will start at 11am with the crownings at 12.45pm.

In other news there’s an Open Day at Girvan’s Stumpy Jail in June.

This free event takes place on Sunday, June 18 from 11am to 4pm- when you can learn all about the history of Stumpy Jail.

On the day there will be a Medieval weapons display, axe throwing and re-enactments of historic cases tried at Stumpy.

A spokesperson for Girvan and District Attractions added: “ Come along and learn about your local history, and see the improvements to Inside Stumpy Jail.”
