Carpentersville man charged in 2015 Homan Square killing

March 25--A Carpentersville man was ordered held without bail Friday after being charged in a fatal Homan Square shooting last year.

Timothy Ward, 26, is facing first-degree murder charges for the slaying of Chazelle Hayes of the 3000 block of West Flournoy Street on July 18, 2015, according to police and prosecutors.

Ward, of the first block of Oxford Drive, appeared at a bond hearing before Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. Prosecutors said Ward was a front passenger in a van being driven by his wife and containing eight other people, including an infant.

The van stopped at a home on the 3500 block of West Grenshaw Street so several people could use the bathroom there. As they waited outside, Ward and several others got out and were "hanging out around the van," according to prosecutors.

Hayes, 25, and several other people walked up and a fight started. One of the people from the van was punched in the face by someone in Haye's group, prosecutors said.

Ward took out a handgun and shot Hayes twice, prosecutors said. Ward and the others jumped back into the van and fled, prosecutors said.

When police arrived, they found Hayes with a gunshot wound to his arm and chest. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Shortly after the shooting, the van was stopped by police and saw Ward in the front passenger seat. Police found a revolver with seven spent shell casings, a holster and a box of ammunition under the front passenger seat, prosecutors said.

Illinois state police officials determined the revolver was used to shoot Hayes.

Ward fled to Tennessee, where he was picked up on a parole violation. He has admitted to the shooting, prosecutors said.
