SCOTLAND midfielder Caroline Weir says she is looking forward to playing for “the biggest club in the world” after ending weeks of speculation by signing for Real Madrid yesterday.
Weir, who left Manchester City at the end of last season, having won two FA Cups and two League Cups during her four years with the WSL side, spoke of her delight at the move as she was paraded at the Bernabeu Stadium.
“It's an honour to be here signing,” the 27-year-old, who has 88 Scotland caps, said.” There is obviously pressure being at this club when you see all the Champions League trophies, but it's what you want to be part of and what we're going to be working towards.
“The Madrid fans are really passionate and they love their football over here so I'm excited to be part of the biggest club in the world.”
The women's team play their games at the 6000 capacity Alfredo di Stefano Stadium in the city. Weir played and scored there last season when her former club and new one met in the second round of the Champions League.
Her goal put City a goal up in the first leg, but Madrid equalised near the end of the game and won the second leg 1-0 in Manchester. Weir is likely to face her old team-mates very quickly, as they have been seeded to meet each other again in a first round mini-tournament final match on August 18.
“I remember playing here last year in the Champions League and how difficult it was with the atmosphere,” she confirmed. “It's going to be nice to be on the other end of that now and have all the support.
“I can't wait to kick off the season in a couple of weeks.”
