Immigration minister Caroline Nokes faced criticism from MPs today over the bill EU workers face in order to apply for “settled status”.
More than a dozen MPs are demanding the £65 fee be paid by the Government or employers rather than EU citizens.
In a letter to Ms Nokes, led by union Prospect, the MPs said it was “shameful” people were having to pay.
Sue Ferns, Prospect’s senior deputy director general, said: “It is shameful that the UK Government, having promised to protect the rights of EU citizens working here before 2019, is failing to live up to that commitment.”
The Scottish Government, University of Cambridge and Natural History Museum are already committed to paying the £65 per application for their employees.
Several NHS trusts have also committed to paying the charge to avoid a “staffing crisis”.
Liberal Democrat and SNP politicians have also signed the letter.
