Caroline Kennedy seeking Clinton's Senate seat

The New York Times reports that Caroline Kennedy, scion of the famed Democratic family, wants to succeed Hillary Clinton in the United States senate, representing New York state. Kennedy is the niece of Robert Kennedy, who held the seat in the 1960s before his assassination.

Hillary Clinton had never lived in New York state when she moved there in 2000 to run for the senate, displacing a generation of ambitious Democratic pols who had their eyes on the seat. Kennedy hasn't held elected office and has few apparent qualifications beyond her name. But at least she lives in New York.

Kennedy, daughter of President John F Kennedy, was a strong supporter of Barack Obama. Other contenders include Kirsten Gillibrand, a popular congresswoman from upstate New York, Tom Suozzi, a former gubernatorial candidate and chief executive of suburban Nassau County, and the state attorney general, Andrew Cuomo.
