Caroline Flack trial officially terminated as court receive late star's death certificate

Caroline Flack, 40, was facing trial for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend Lewis Burton in December 2019 before she tragically took her own life on February 15.

She was due to attend Highbury Corner Magistrates Court in London on March 4 after she pleaded not guilty to assault by beating following an alleged early-morning altercation.

Her alleged victim and boyfriend Lewis Burton, 27, had begged authorities to drop the court case and pleaded she was innocent.

The case has now been formally terminated as the court have received a copy of Caroline's death certificate, The Sun reports.

According to British law, as formal evidence of death has been given, the proceedings have ended and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who were bringing the charges have issued a discontinuance - which ends the litigation.

A CPS spokesperson told the publication: “Court proceedings against Caroline Flack came to an official end on February 25.”

They added: "We had to provide a death certificate as a record that the defendant was deceased.

"Despite media coverage of Caroline’s death and public comments made by her family about her death we needed to make this a formality to close the case.

"It is a formality that had to be be done and now has been.”

The presenter had been due to stand trial on March 4 for an alleged assault on her boyfriend Lewis, an incident which plunged her career and personal life into crisis.

She was forced to step down from Love Island and retreated to Los Angeles where she tried to get her life back on track.

Despite enjoying a hugely successful career, she had struggled to find lasting happiness and had spoken in the past of batting depression.

Caroline was tragically found dead at her London home on February 15 after taking her own life. She was just 40 years old.

Since her death, it emerged Caroline wasn't taken to hospital when she was given a clinical assessment by paramedics at her flat on Valentine's Day.

In less than 24 hours, the Strictly Come Dancing winner had killed herself.

London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed: "Crews attended and, following a clinical assessment, the person was not taken to hospital. Due to patient confidentiality we cannot comment further."
