Caroline Flack's mum reveals late Love Island host might have had bipolar before she died

Caroline Flack's mum says the late Love Island host was told she may have had bipolar weeks before she died.

Christine has revealed that her TV star daughter had suffered for a long time with her mental health but kept it hidden.

She says the last doctor Caroline saw before she tragically took her own life on February 15 2020 thought she might have had bipolar - a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings with episodes of depression and feeling very high and overactive.

Speaking out in the hope of helping others, Christine says her daughter was dropped by a children's cancer charity just 24 hours before she took her own life as her mental health hit rock bottom.

She said in an interview with The Sun : "Carrie suffered for a long while, but never showed it because her outgoing personality covered everything.

"Mainly she was happy, and funny, and brilliant. She just had these terrific down times - and not many people saw those down times.

"That was the thing; she hid it. The last doctor she saw thought she may have had bipolar. And that’s what I always thought. It was just constant highs, all of a sudden, then the lows."

Caroline hosted Love Island from 2015 (ITV)

Caroline was replaced by her friend Laura Whitmore on the 2020 winter series after stepping down from the hit show.

She had been charged with assault by beating after an alleged domestic incident with her boyfriend Lewis Burton and was due to go on trial in March.

The former X Factor presenter took her own life within 24 hours of finding out the Crown Prosecution Service intended to pursue the case. She was just 40 years old.

Caroline's management company criticised the CPS for pursuing a trial regarding her assault charge despite her boyfriend saying he did not support it.

She had denied the charge and was released on bail, with conditions that stopped her having any contact with Lewis, ahead of a trial set for March 4.

Laura was recently back to host the summer series show, won by Millie Court and Liam Reardon.

Christine says she hasn't been able to watch Love Island, which launched in 2015, since Caroline's death.
