Caroline Flack’s mother attacks lawyer’s remarks on assault case

Caroline Flack’s mother today hit out at comments made by a lawyer who said the Crown Prosecution Service was right to pursue the TV presenter’s trial.

The Love Island star took her own life in February while facing an assault charge for an alleged attack on her boyfriend Lewis Burton.

Ed Beltrami, who was head of the CPS north London division at the time, said yesterday: “You’ve got to do what you think is right. You cannot do what you think is popular.”

He added that when the decision was taken to proceed with the case “you have absolutely no idea that the defendant is going to take her own life”.

The charge could not be dropped just because Mr Burton did not want the incident to be brought before the courts, he said, adding: “You just don’t fold at the first sign of trouble – the fact that the victim doesn’t want to know.

“You’ve got to look at whether you can prosecute without the support of the victim.”

But in a statement in her local newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press, Chris Flack said: “It is deeply regrettable that Mr Beltrami could not have let my beautiful daughter rest in peace.

"The CPS released the demons that chased down Caroline.”
