Caroline Flack CPS review branded a disgrace by leading barrister

A top lawyer has slammed the Crown Prosecution Service review into the decision to go ahead with Caroline Flack's trial before her death last month.

The former Love Island host was charged with assault following an incident at her London home involving boyfriend Lewis Burton. Caroline, 40, pleaded not guilty to the charges against her and was due to stand trial for the matter in April.

Sadly, Caroline took her own life on Saturday, February 15, and prosecutors were accused of pursuing a "show trial" against her.

The CPS review into its decision to push on with the trial ruled that they “acted appropriately and in line with our published legal guidance.”

But, speaking to The Mirror, experienced criminal barrister Chris Daw QC has attacked the secrecy surrounding the review and the CPS’s lack of transparency over its process.

He said: “It’s a disgrace. It’s an opportunity to take a fresh look at mental health in prosecution decision-making.

Instead they have had a behind-closed-doors review which, let’s be honest, if it has been done in this time- frame can’t have considered the wider picture at all.”

Mr Daw thinks Caroline’s mental health struggles meant she should not have been charged. He said it was “outrageous the report will not be made public.

In an 18-minute Instagram video, Caroline's ex Danny Cipriani, revealed he missed a call from Caroline the night before her death as he had a rugby game. He said: "She text me on Friday she had to plead guilty."

Refusing to place blame on just the CPS or the media, Danny said: "It is the society we've created; ultimately it was embarrassment and shame that killed her."
