Caroline Flack allegedly struck her boyfriend on the head with lamp as he slept, court hears

Former Love Island presenter Caroline Flack broke down in court as she pleaded not guilty to assaulting her boyfriend Lewis Burton in an alleged drunken altercation at her home in London on December 13.

Flack, 40, stepped down as host of the upcoming winter series on ITV after being arrested following a domestic incident earlier this month.

She was charged with assaulting former professional tennis player and model Lewis Burton, 27, by beating at her flat in North Islington.

Flack appeared before magistrates at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Monday, speaking to confirm her name, address, date of birth and nationality.

Her lawyer Paul Morris interrupted proceedings to tell District Judge Julia Newton that Burton does not support the prosecution.

"He is not a victim, he is a witness," he said.

When the charge was read before the court, Flack answered: "Not guilty."

Prosecutor Katie Weiss said: "He is a victim, he sustained a significant injury to his head."

Ms Weiss discussed the night in question, and told the court that one attending police officer likened the scene to a horror movie.

"He made an allegation regarding his girlfriend Caroline. The first police officer arrived some eight minutes later. He knocked on the door and it was opened by both of them. Both were covered in blood," said Ms Weiss.

Referring to the 999 call, Ms Weiss continued: "He is almost begging the operator to send help. She calls him an arsehole repeatedly.

"He had been asleep and had been hit in the head with a lamp. His face was covered in blood."

Ms Weiss added that Flack had seen text messages which had led her to believe he was cheating on her.

She told the court that Mr Burton said to the operator: "I've just woken up, she has cracked my head open. She tried to kill me mate."

Ms Weiss added: "Her behaviour gets worse, she flips over a table and then has to be restrained on the ground."

The pair, that remain in a relationship, arrived at court separately and Mr Burton watched the proceedings from the packed public gallery.

He has previously spoken out in support of the presenter, claiming she has become the subject of a "witch hunt" following her arrest.

Flack's solicitor made an application to have a bail condition banning her from talking to her boyfriend lifted.

Mr Morris said: "They had been in a relationship all of this year and he appears in court today to support her and they remain a couple.

"She wants to spend time with her partner. If the conditions were lifted there would be no concerns. It's not irrelevant point, it's Christmas, it's New Year, she's suffered enough."

Flack began to cry into her hand as Mr Morris spoke.

Ms Weiss however told the court that Flack had "flouted" her bail condition not to have any direct or indirect contact with Mr Burton after posting messages on Instagram, which read "to my boyfriend, I love you."

Ms Weiss said the trial would use body-worn footage from the police officers at the scene and the 999 call.

In a statement, ITV said: "ITV has a long standing relationship with Caroline and we understand and accept her decision.

"We will remain in contact with her over the coming months about future series of Love Island."

Laura Whitmore  has been confirmed as Caroline's replacement next month.

She will join boyfriend Iain Stirling in South Africa and the pair will also co-host the spin-off show Aftersun.
