The Carolina Panthers, currently riding high with a 9-0 record, may well have won themselves even more fans after taking a swipe at Washington and their unpopular name on Twitter.
Washington travel to the Panthers on Sunday and decided to start the pre-game build-up with a tweet of their fans singing the team’s fight song, Hail to the Redskins, at a Charlotte bar:
Carolina is #Redskins country. #HTTR pic.twitter.com/mwOxn2IGxS

The Panthers hit back with a jab – a much better one, if truth be told:
@Redskins Good luck with getting a trademark on that 😊

The “Redskins” name is hugely unpopular with many people, as it is considered offensive to Native Americans. Critics of the name include Barack Obama who said in 2013: “If I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team — even if it had a storied history — that was offending a sizeable group of people, I’d think about changing it.”
The Panthers’ tweet referred to a decision in July to uphold the cancellation of the “Redskins” trademark due to the fact that it is offensive to Native Americans.
Although Washington hit back with another tweet, the internet was in little doubt over who won the pre-game hostilities:
