The Carolina Panthers are in search of a new general manager as of Monday morning. The team announced that GM Marty Hurney has been fired.
Hurney’s contract was schedule to run through 2021.
Panthers owner David Tepper made this statement via the team’s website:
“I think sometimes you just need a restart, a refresh,” Tepper said. “We did it last year on the coaching side. Maybe you could say it should have been done before on the GM side. Maybe it should have been. I’m sure people may say that, or otherwise, on both sides.
“I think it’s just time, on both sides, to do that. It just seems like the right time to move forward.”
Monday’s news brings about the end of Hurney’s second tour of duty as Carolina’s general manager. He held that same role from 2002 to 2012 and returned in 2017 after now-New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman was dismissed.
According to the Panthers’ website, the club already has candidates in mind in terms of the now vacant position. The search will also begin immediately for Hurney’s replacement.
The Panthers are currently 4-10 overall in head coach Matt Rhule’s first year as head coach. Carolina has also only had the services of star running back Christian McCaffrey for three games in 2020.
