She explained how her father Tony Vorderman and her step-father Gabriel Rizzi fought on different sides during the Second World War and how Remembrance day shouldn't be about politics.

The TV presenter told the story of her father who had been in the Dutch Resistance as a "radio man", she said: "His was a war of hiding and secrecy and bravery. Twice he escaped the Nazis."

Carol also told her step-fathers story, he was an Italian prisoner of war and came to north Wales to work on a farm, she said she "adored him".

She said: "So my father and stepfather were on opposite sides during the war. They did not create the war. Theirs were different stories."

She further added: "It always brought home to me how important it is to remember not those with gilded political status....but those who have given their all, so that their fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters and friends can live in a life of peace."

She described the poppies in the photo as "some of my most precious possessions" as she explained that these were poppies that were scattered over London by an RAF Lancaster.

Carol herself is a qualified pilot with her own private pilot's licence and is an Ambassador and Honorary Group Captain for the Air Cadets and Royal Air Force.
