Carol Vorderman has revealed she was rushed to hospital after being knocked unconscious in a horror fall outside her home.
The former Countdown presenter, 65, shared a health update on Instagram, explaining she had been largely absent from social media after tripping over a tree root on a public footpath at the end of May.
“I've got a bit of a story to tell you about my concussion, which might also explain why I was a bit offline in June,” she said. “I tripped over a tree root, which I didn't see, and I went smash onto the tarmac path. I was unconscious.”
Vorderman said she has no memory of what happened immediately afterwards but was taken by ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary.
“I also know they were playing The Final Countdown in the ambulance on the way,” she joked. “It's another story, but it did make me laugh.”
Although she was discharged the following day, her condition quickly deteriorated.
“I had massive vomiting... all the bad signs,” she said. “Straight back into hospital they were wonderful. A&E did all the CT scans and everything.”
The broadcaster was later discharged again but was left with severe bruising around her eye and face, as well as lingering dizziness.
“It felt as though I was walking on a moving ship, knocking into the wall a little bit,” she said, adding that she often felt as though the room was spinning.
Vorderman was eventually diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition caused by tiny crystals becoming displaced in the inner ear, which can trigger dizziness and balance problems.
She credited a physiotherapist named Sophie with helping her recover using the Epley manoeuvre, a series of head movements designed to reposition the crystals.
“I'm not a doctor. I'm not advising people about this, I'm just telling you what's happened to me,” she stressed.
After three physiotherapy sessions, Vorderman said she has now been discharged and “couldn't be happier.”
In May, Vorderman demanded an apology from a “cowardly” Reform UK candidate in the Makerfield by-election who supported an offensive post about her.
According to reports, Robert Kenyon used a now-deleted X account to support an offensive post about the Welsh broadcaster.
Messages published by campaign group Hope Not Hate showed that Mr Kenyon responded on Christmas Eve 2021 to another person’s post including graphic sexual language about the presenter, who made her name as the maths expert on Channel 4’s Countdown.
Alongside a thumbs up and a laughing emoji, the plumber wrote: “He’s only saying what we’re all thinking.”
Vorderman told The Mirror: “I want an apology from Rob Kenyon, to me, and to all the other people he’s abused online.
“I’m 65, I grew up in North Wales in abject poverty, I spent half of my life living in the North, whether it was Leeds, or Manchester, or that strip of North Wales.”
