Carol Vorderman grilled over Countdown return after Anne Robinson's exit

Carol Vorderman has responded to rumours she's set to return to Countdown after being quizzed on ITV's Lorraine. The 61-year-old, who was the maths expert on the game show from 1982 to 2008, was asked about the position of host during an interview about Celebrity Gogglebox alongside co-star and friend Gyles Brandreth.

It comes after Anne Robinson stepped down as Countdown host in May, with Colin Murray announced as the temporary replacement host. Asking Carol about the position, Lorraine said: "There's a vacancy on Countdown. You could come back as the host, I think it would be a great thing to do, don't you? What do you think?"

"Well," Carol responded sounding a little uncertain, before adding: "I loved my time with Richard (Whiteley), Richard particularly, we laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed."

She continued: "Everyone who watched, we never, ever said the word 'viewer', they were 'Countdowners'. It was a family and it was a very special time for a long time."

"I call that old Countdown, previous Countdown," Carol added, reminiscing. Gyles then interjected, telling Lorraine: "Also, I think Carol is someone who likes to do new things."

"You're both similar in that, you like new challenges," Lorraine said, as Carol excitedly responded: "I love a new challenge."

Carol and Gyles are appearing on Celebrity Gogglebox together after the Channel 4 show replaced Joanna Lumley with Carol for the latest episodes. Speaking about the experience, Gyles said: "I'll tell you what's really lovely, and I would suggest this seriously to people if you're living on your own get a friend and watch telly with them. It's a really nice way of enjoying an evening.

"We are very old friends but I had forgotten how easy it is being together, just fun and having the programme to chat about with snacks." For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
