Carol Vorderman apologises as she's left in tears over live ITV This Morning surprise

Carol Vorderman was reduced to tears as she appeared on This Morning. The former Countdown host was back on the ITV daytime programme on Friday (October 21) alongside Gyles Brandreth. The pair were back together on the show with their latest 'love clinic'.

But before they got involved in viewers' calls, Pride of Britain supporter and host Carol watched as Josie Gibson walk into a police station in West Bromwich to surprise PC Leon Mittoo and PC James Willetts from West Midlands Police Service who were revealed as the winner of a Pride of Britain Award in the This Morning's Emergency Services category.

Viewers got to see some footage of their heroic moment during a horrific knife attack whilst on duty in a shopping centre. Josie made her way into the room where the officers were none the wiser. PC Mittoo and PC Willetts were stunned as they were covered in confetti.

On winning the award PC Mittoo said, “I’m lost for words, I don’t know what to say!” while PC Willetts added: "I’m so shocked." Josie had also joked: "Do you know how hard it is to be inconspicuous… in a police station!"

Speaking of the incident, PC Mittoo said: "It was a knife attack out of the blue really… We followed [the two men] up escalators, one tried to run and they pulled out these knives. Luckily we managed to detain them and we were both really lucky… and yes, we have recovered [from their injuries] now… but what they [the two men, who were later jailed for 18 years] had on them [several other weapons] it could have been a lot worse."

On getting the award, PC Willetts admitted: "It's not something you ever expect to get it or to even be nominated for something like that." PC Mittoo added: "It's nice, I’m obviously proud and I hope my family is proud but it’s just what we all do as police officers. It’s just police work really."

Back in the studio, Alison Hammond said: "They are definitely heroes", with Dermot adding: "Have a great night at the Pride of Britain awards too!" The former X Factor host then turned to a clearly emotional Carol and asked for her thoughts.

"I can’t wait to see you on Monday night!" she said as wiped tears from her face. Carol continued: "Sorry, I get emotional it’s the Pride of Britain Awards. And their story is something else!"
