Carol Vorderman among bookies' favourites to replace Nick Hewer on Countdown

Carol Vorderman is a potential favourite to replace the departing Nick Hewer on her classic show Countdown.

Bookmaker Coral places Carol, 59, at odds of 3-1 to replace Nick as the lead host of the Channel 4 gameshow following the news that he would be stepping down from the show at the end of his contract.

Carol previously served as the co-host of the show from 1982 to 2008, after which she was replaced by Rachel Riley who still appears on the show.

However, if the bookies are right, perhaps we could be in line for a comeback for Carol.

Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: "Countdown will have a new permanent host in the New Year but we think it could be a familar face.

"We make Carol Vorderman 3-1 to complete a sensational return to the show as host."

However, despite the potential for a Carol comeback, she is not the absolute favourite to replace Nick.

Colin Murray, who has acted as a stand-in for Nick previously, is currently the favourite at odds of 2-1.

"Stand in Colin Murray is the favourite, with other contenders including Clare Balding and Sandi Toksvig," noted Aitkenhead.

Other contenders include Clare Balding at 4-1, Sandi Toksvig at 6-1, while Ben Shepherd and Davina McCall both sit at odds of 8-1.

Meanwhile, Pointless star Alexander Armstrong sits at 16-1, while his co-star Richard Osman is at 25-1.

Announcing his decision to step down from Countdown yesterday, Nick explained why now was the time to depart the gameshow after a decade.

He tweeted: "Delighted to be back in the Countdown studio after another enforced lockdown, BUT this latest lockdown has given me an opportunity to consider my future life.

"I've decided it’s a good time to step down at the end of my contract in the New Year."

Nick explained: "As someone in his 77th year, who will be in his 10th year hosting the great British institution that is Countdown, I think it’s time to smell the flowers and get a dog."

We wish Nick the best of luck with his future!

Countdown airs on Channel 4 on weekdays at 2.10pm.
