Carnlough: PSNI confirm woman, 50, died following swimming incident in Co Antrim

A 50-year-old woman has died following an incident in Co Antrim, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Carnlough just after 1.30pm on Wednesday afternoon, August 4.

The woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

PSNI, RNLI, HM Coastguard, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the NI Air Ambulance were in attendance, according to reports.

An NIAS spokesperson said: "No one was taken from the scene."

In an update the following day, Thursday, August 5, police confirmed a 50-year-old woman had died following the incident.

Police are carrying out an investigation, but the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

A post mortem will be carried out in due course.

In a statement on Wednesday night, Councillor James McKeown said: "My prayers and condolences are with the family of the deceased at this sad time.

"I understand that a woman had been out swimming when she suffered a heart attack while she was out in the water, or just as she left it.

"Unfortunately despite the hard work of the emergency services she was unable to make it and was pronounced dead at the scene."
