Carnival atmosphere for Civic Theatre and City Hall's birthday

Hundreds of people showed their love on Sunday for two of Newcastle's grandest buildings - Civic Theatre and City Hall.

The 90th anniversary of the opening of the two buildings was marked with a public access-all-areas tour.

As people toured the buildings - many taking a stroll down memory lane - Wheeler Place was a hub of activity.

Rankin Park's Ken and Zelda McCallum took a tour of the theatre.

"It's a lovely old theatre and one the city should be proud of," Mr McCallum said.

"Not many regional cities would have a theatre as good as this."

Mrs McCallum recalled meeting a friend in town to book seats early for the winter season.

"We'd usually get the second, third or fourth row - not the first row because you can get spitting."

Albina Gayoso, 29, also took the tour, saying she had great passion for theatre.

"Ever since I was a child, my parents would take me to the theatre," she said.

East Maitland's Judith Francke grew up in Newcastle and recalled attending Town Hall dances on a Saturday night in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

"We used to have balls in there," she said, recalling time spent with old friends.

"Happy memories."

Steve Hirst, a "born and bred Newcastle boy", reflected on the area's history.

"I still like the old Newcastle. Newcastle has changed so much from what it was," Mr Hirst said.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the event was a chance to celebrate the "historic pasts and bright futures of both the Civic Theatre and City Hall".

She said the buildings were part of the city's fabric.
