Carnage erupts on flight after 'corona air rage' sparked by lack of social distancing

Mayhem broke out on a Spanish flight after passengers became involved in "corona air rage" prompted by social distancing fears.

Furious travellers argued with a flight assistant as they claimed the government's advice of keeping two metres apart was not being adhered to on board.

Although the allegations have been refuted by the company involved, Iberia Express, airlines have been asked to respect distances and "ensure the appropriate security between passengers."

The incident happened on an Iberia Express flight on Sunday between Madrid and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

The flight was one of the few which has been operating between the islands although more are now being allowed provided the 50 per cent occupancy limit is adhered to.

Passengers on board the Iberia Express plane, all wearing masks, took to the social networks to express their "disgust" that the coronavirus rules were being flouted.

One angry woman tweeted: "Where is the safety distance @Iberia? The plane is almost completely full and there is not even a separation seat between passengers. This is an outrage."

And another said: " What the heck is this? How can this be allowed? Are we crazy? Where is the safety distance @Iberia?"

Footage shows how several people on the flight argue with the flight attendant because they felt "uncomfortable" at the distances between people.

They claim the cabin was "almost full" and some rows did not have separation seats.

At least three men are seen gesticulating angrily at the male flight attendant as other passengers, some standing in the aisles, look on.

Many took to their mobile phones to record the incident and to post complaints.

Iberia Express responded to one of the passengers on Twitter, saying: "Hello, we are sorry to read your message. However we want to assure you that we comply with all the security arrangements."

“We have reinforced the daily cleaning and disinfection of the cabin and all its elements and our fleet has an air system and HEPA filters that are 99.9% effective against viruses and bacteria."

Ana Oramas of Canary Coalition and a deputy in Congress said she was going to ask Madrid to intervene, saying what had happened was "inadmissable".

Minister of Public Works and Transport of the Canarian Government, Sebastián Franquis said airline had to comply with the rules on safety distances and voiced his "enormous concern about these breaches."

The Canary Islands, where the incidence of coronavirus is low and deaths stand at 149, has today entered phase one of the Spanish government's de-escalation plan. This allows travel between the islands and the opening of hotels, plus the terraces to 50 per cent of capacity of bars and restaurants.
