Carnagat Road crash: Police close road in Newry following collision near school

Drivers in Newry have been advised to take an alternative route due to a road traffic collision on Carnagat Road.

The incident happened at around 5am this morning (Monday, August 30) in the direction of Rathore School.

Shortly after the incident the road was closed by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) while awaiting recovery of the vehicle.

A statement on Trafficwatch Northern Ireland's official Twitter account read: "Road Users are advised that there has been a RTC on the the Carnagat Rd Newry in the direction of Rathmore School.

"The PSNI are on site awaiting recovery of the vehicle - road users are advised to seek an alternative route for their journeys at this time."

In 2020, PSNI recorded 6,487 road traffic collisions in the country, down from 8,872 in the previous year.

One factor for the decrease in numbers could be due to the coronavirus pandemic, where Northern Ireland was in lockdown on three separate occasions from March 2020 and December 2020.
