Carmine Caridi death: Godfather actor dies, aged 85

Carmine Caridi, who was best known for his roles in two Godfather films, has died at the age of 85.

His agency, Jordan Lee Talent, confirmed Caridi’s death to The Independent. The actor died on Tuesday at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Caridi first appeared in the Godfather franchise in 1974, when he played Carmine Rosato in The Godfather Part II.

He returned in 1990 as Albert Volpe in The Godfather Part III.

“From Broadway to film and television, Carmine spent over six decades entertaining audiences, and nothing made him happier,” Caridi’s agency said in a statement.

They added: “His talent, wit, warmth, and charm will be missed. Carmine passed peacefully, surrounded by friends and family.”

Born on 23 January, 1934, Caridi scored roles in the 1974 crime films Crazy Joe and The Gambler before his Godfather debut.

Caridi told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that acting had saved his life, as all his friends had become involved with the mob.

He later played gangster and crime boss Frank Costello in the 1991 Bugsy, and appeared alongside Chuck Norris in the 1995 buddy cop comedy Top Dog.

In 2004, Caridi became the first person to be expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for sharing VCR copies of movie screeners.

“I sent [them] to people, besides my brother and sister, who couldn’t afford them,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I made a lot of people happy.”
