Carmarthen's Wetherspoons pub has re-opened after a five-month £2m revamp and it's now got a roof garden

A Wetherspoons pub in Carmarthen is set to re-open after being closed for five months and undergoing a massive £2m revamp.

Yr Hen Dderwen, which is located in King Street in the town centre, shut its doors in July this year after announcing the huge project, which would see the pub transformed along with the creation of 60 new jobs.

It had been hoped that the pub - the only JD Wetherspoon in the town and one of only three in south west Wales - would be open by late November, but a slight delay meant the re-opening was put back two weeks.

From Tuesday (December 7), customers will be able to see the new pub for themselves after an extensive refurbishment which has included a complete redecoration and the installation of a new ground floor bar and food serving gantry.

There is also a new staircase and a lift to a first-floor customer dining area and the new roof garden, a space that overlooks the back of the pub which can cater for more than 100 customers. In total the pub will have room for an additional 220 customers.

The seating area inside the pub has also been improved. New booths have been installed along with enlarged rear windows and sliding bi-fold doors linking the inside with the new external areas.

On the new garden terrace, glass has been placed around the perimeter to enhance people’s rooftop views. And if it’s too cold to enjoy the outside just yet, a new heating system has been installed inside the pub, together with a real fire for the first time.

Elsewhere, new toilets have been added, both in the basement and to serve the first floor and beer garden area, while a cellar upgrade and new kitchen facilities have also been completed as part of the huge revamp.

The pub itself opened almost 20 years ago in 2002 and, until now, had very limited space for customers to sit outside, with inside seating only available on one floor.

Plans to change all that were first lodged in 2018 and despite fears that the coronavirus pandemic could result in a long delay or even a shelving of the project, the company confirmed in the summer that the work would go ahead as part of a £700m investment in its UK pubs.

Manager of Yr Hen Dderwen, Sarah Hooper, said: “We are thrilled with all of our new-look pub and brand new facilities, particularly the roof garden which will provide a lovely outdoor space for our customers.”

The mayor of Carmarthen, councillor Gareth John, will be attending the opening of the pub, which takes place at 8am on Tuesday morning.
