'Carmageddon!' Drivers react after Clifton Bridge closure causes severe delays across the city

Drivers have voiced their frustration after a bridge defect caused one of the main roads out of the city to be closed.

The closure of part of the A52 Clifton Bridge means motorists have to follow diversions and find alternative routes home.

Repair teams have been at the scene since Thursday (February 6) after 'damaged steelwork' was discovered.

Traffic built up on Clifton Boulevard, Middleton Boulevard, Queens Drive, University Boulevard/Abbey Street/Derby Road, London Road, Derby Road and Ilkeston Road on Friday night (February 7).

Driver took to social media to speak out about the severe delays caused by the closures.

Midilink, a bus service linking to the two main hospital sites and the Wilkinson Street and Queen's Drive park and ride, was praised.

The eastbound carriageway on the A52 was closed for safety reasons between A453 Clifton Lane and A453 Queens Drive after 'damaged steelwork' was found.

As a result of repair work, one lane in in the westbound direction, towards the city and near the Queen's Medical Centre, is also closed.

A diversion was put in place and Highways England originally hoped the road would reopen by midday on Friday, February 7.

However, in an updated statement, it was announced the road closure would remain until "early next week".

Highways England has said the closure is causing "significant delays".

Motorists have been advised to plan ahead and add extra time to their journeys.
