Carly McBride's killer hospitalised after jail assault

Sayle Kenneth Newson.

The man convicted of brutally murdering Hunter mother Carly McBride in 2014 remained in hospital on Monday after he was allegedly assaulted in jail two weeks ago - in an attack that left him with facial injuries.

Sayle Kenneth Newson, 43, was taken to hospital after the incident at Shortland Correctional Centre at Cessnock about 9am on Monday, June 28.

Three men - aged 29, 30 and 37 - who are accused of attacking Newson, have been placed in segregation and face the prospect of charges.

Corrective Services NSW confirmed on Monday that a man remained in hospital after an alleged assault at the Cessnock jail complex a fortnight ago.

Newson professed his innocence in court last month after being found guilty of murdering the 31-year-old mother-of-two at Muswellbrook on September 30, 2014.

The verdict meant the jury was convinced that Newson, a trained martial artist, bashed Ms McBride in a jealous and ice-fuelled rage before dumping her body in bushland.

Newson was Ms McBride's boyfriend of about eight weeks when he murdered her.

Ms McBride's remains were discovered about 25 metres from Bunnan Road at Owens Gap, outside Scone, in August 2016.

Newson has lodged a notice of intent to appeal his conviction. His legal team has six months to file the appeal before the matter is listed for hearing in the Court of Criminal Appeal.
