Mark Weir resigned as manager of Carluke Rovers on Sunday following a 6-0 West of Scotland League Conference B hammering at Ashfield.
Weir admits the heavy defeat pushed him, but family commitments were making the job difficult, and admits that might be the end of his involvement in football altogether.
The father-of-four has two young footballers and a runner amongst his own family, and that meant he didn’t have much spare time to spend with them and his wife, before his Rovers duties even came into it.
But Weir – who is ending a 20-year association with the club – says Rovers will be in safe hands with his assistant Kenny Neill taking over in at least the short-term.
“I was hoping to see the end of the season out, but Saturday’s result made my mind up to go a wee bit earlier, for the club to hopefully bring someone else in and move forward,” he said.
“To be honest, that’s me probably finished with football now.
“I’ve got four kids and a wife now; two of my kids are footballers – one of them is at Ayr United pro youth, so I’m there three times a week now, one of my other ones is on trial at Livingston – and one of my other kids does running, so I’m out of the house every single night.
“I was at Livingston from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, and was going from there to Carluke for an 8pm start – it was just impossible, and I was 10 minutes late.

“It was time to take a step back and concentrate on my kids and my wife, who hardly sees me.”
Weir says there are no hard feelings, and wishes Kenny Neill and the club success.
“I’m grateful for my time at Carluke, with them giving me the opportunity to manage at a club I’ve been at for most of my career, and I wish them all the best,” he said.
“I hope someone comes in and moves the team forwards.
“I thank Kenny, my assistant, for the job he did.
“He’s going to be staying on, taking the team, until the committee decide what road they’re going to go down.
“I wish however does take it on all the best, and I hope they can take the team forward.”
The West of Scotland League now enters its festive break. Carluke are due to return to action on January 8, 2022, away to Royal Albert.
