Carluke Rovers lost 5-3 to a strong Petershill side on Saturday, but boss Mark Weir says there are plenty of positives to take from the game.
Weir reckons pre-season games are at their most valuable when the team is tested to the full, and says they could have taken something from an opponent that he feels will be amongst the West of Scotland League Conference C favourites.
He said: “The first half could have gone either way, half-time came at the wrong time for us.
“First 10-15 minutes we were slow in getting started but once we were up and running I thought we matched them, and Petershill are a very good side.
“Half-time came at the wrong time, I made a few changes to give guys game-time and try people in different positions, but overall it was a decent run-out for us.
“You want to challenge yourself against good opposition, it lets you know how far we are or if we’re there or thereabouts. It was a great exercise, because Petershill will be one of the teams in the Conferences who teams will look to beat.”
Weir is happy with progress so far this pre-season and will continue that with a friendly at West Calder on Saturday.
He said: “I’m happy with the squad, with my guys. With these games at the moment we’re trying different things, working on things.
"We’ve tried a few things that won’t work for us, but we’re also seeing plenty of positives, so long may that continue.”
