Carluke Rovers boss says it's time to cancel West of Scotland League campaign

Carluke Rovers boss Mark Weir insists it’s time to be realistic and cancel the West of Scotland League season.

With football below the Championship still suspended, the WoSL announced a contingency plan to reschedule fixtures to fulfil 50 percent of the season.

But Weir believes it’s impossible to predict when football will return and called for clarity so he can begin to focus on next season.

He said: “I’m still at the stage that I think they should scrub the full season and start from scratch next season.

“Hopefully, everything is cleared and the vaccination is rolled out.

“The stop, start nature of things isn’t any good for myself or the players.“

Weir revealed that his senior players are in agreement, adding:”I’ve not spoken to all my players, just the senior boys and they’re at the same stage.

“Stopping then starting is beginning to get to them and they just want to know if they’ll be playing all the way through or just stopping.”

There is no relegation or promotion in the WoSL this season and Weir believes that makes it easier to just cancel the season.

He said:”This season is basically just in preparation for next season anyway.

“Obviously, you want to win as many games as you can and finish as high up as possible.

“But it’s really just a season full of friendly games to get yourselves ready for the new season.”

The Rovers boss has ensured his players receive training programmes and he’s fortunate to have a personal trainer within his squad.

He said: “Goalkeeper David Earl is a PT so he’s given everyone exercises, drills and routines to do from home.

“So the players are still keeping themselves fit and ticking over, just in case the season was to restart suddenly.

"There is no ball work so nothing is mandatory but most of the boys seem to be partaking.”
