Carluke Rovers boss orders shooting drills after Whitehill Welfare cup exit

Carluke Rovers boss Mark Weir insists they’ll be brushing up on their shooting skills this week after crashing out of the Challenge Cup to Whitehill Welfare.

A double from Robert McKenzie sent the West of Scotland League Conference B side out at the first hurdle in a 2-0 defeat at Ferguson Park.

And with a return to league duties against Port Glasgow this weekend, Weir has warned his players they must find their shooting boots to do any damage.

He said: “We never took our chances against Whitehill and it came back to haunt us. It was disappointing considering we controlled the full game.

“I thought the boys played well because we created a lot, but Whitehill had two chances and scored with both of them.

“We weren’t under much pressure; two long balls caught us out.

“But they put the ball in the net twice and that was enough to knock us out.

”If you don’t take chances, you don’t win games.

“So we’ll be working hard on things in training. There will be plenty of shooting drills on the go and when we go into the Port Glasgow game I’ll be drilling into the guys that we need to take chances.

“We will be getting as much shooting practice in as we can.”

In a shorter season with few cup opportunities, Weir is gutted to be out so early. He added: “We’ve said to them let’s get a good run in the cup and, first game in it, we are out.

“It’s very disappointing. Teams aren’t working very hard for goals, but the good thing is we’ve been playing well overall in games and creating a lot."
