Carluke High School welcomes Lanarkshire politician

Pupils from Carluke High School welcomed Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley to their classroom this week.

Fifth and sixth year students studying journalism and social sciences such as modern studies and history were given the opportunity to find out about the role and responsibilities of a member of parliament.

The enthusiastic bunch grilled their MP with questions on a range of topics including climate change, online abuse and what it’s like to be a woman in politics.

Afterwards Ms Crawley said: "I really enjoyed getting to speak with the pupils because it is important that young people are included in the political process.

"My role as MP is to represent everyone in the constituency including young people.

"It is just as important for me to listen to and understand their concerns as it is for them to understand how their MP represents them.

"They were very clued up on societal issues such as climate change and they had some excellent questions lined up."

Subject teacher Mr Weir added: "I’d like to thank Angela for coming along today. It was an excellent opportunity for our journalism and social sciences pupils to get an insight into the life of an MP and we had a good discussion about politics, being an MP and the issues which are important to our pupils."
