Carluke boss Weir believes Nicola Sturgeon's latest update signals end of season

Carluke Rovers boss Mark Weir reckons Nicola Sturgeon’s latest coronavirus update signals the end of the West of Scotland League season.

Weir has said for weeks that he’s in favour of scrapping the current season and starting again, but believes the decision to remain in lockdown until April is the final nail in that coffin.

He said: “It’s time to cancel it now; the announcement on Tuesday just confirmed that we aren’t going to be back playing this season.

“Hopefully we can start next season on time and everything will be closer to normality, but it’s time to be realistic.

“There’s no point delaying things in hope, it’s time to scrub the season now.”

Weir has been in constant dialogue with Carluke’s committee throughout the suspension.

He has also spoken at length to club secretary Gary Simpson since Sturgeon’s announcement.

Weir says even the those at the club who were the most optimistic have now lost hope.

He said: “It has absolutely scunnered us and it’s sickening – they are at the same stage as me now.

“It’s not like Gary at all because he’s usually one to be positive and want everything to move forward.

“There is a meeting on March 1 to decide a new committee for the league. They’ll also discuss this season so hopefully we can get some clarity.

“It’s unfair on the boys because they deserve to know what’s happening.
